How to Repair and Diagnose a Worn Serpentine Belt

The howling you hear from under the hood probably isn't the cat you ran over, but rather screaming fan belts. While the modern serpentine belt (single belt system) systems used today have fixed a lot of those old belt slipping problems, the old v-belts used on most cars built before 1990 can wear and glaze over with age. When that happens, they can slip - and you'll be the first to know. Follow these guidelines to deal with diagnosis and repair if needed. Here is what it looks like on your engine:

Getting stranded is no fun. Slipping belts are most often detected by the loud screaming under the hood. If you car or truck is equipped with power steering, the belts will scream the call of the wild when you turn the wheels while parked. In a worst case scenario, slipping belts can keep your water pump from turning at the correct speed and cause your engine to overheat, especially during stop and go driving.

Make sure you choose a reliable auto auto repair shop that will provide adequate support when you need it. Here is what the belt typically looks like before it is installed:

To avoid any serious problems, it would be wise to replace your belts as soon as these symptoms occur. V-Belts usually last up to four years, but it varies due to the climate you drive in. Check your belts regularly or during an oil change for any signs of cracking, brittleness or breaking. If the belts are slightly glazed and do not have any other symptoms mentioned above, you may only need a little lubrication.

NOTE: Be sure to use a belt dressing recommended for belts. Other lubricants can cause the belts to slip off the pulleys and cause major problems.
