Federal safety agency expands investigation of GM cars NHTSA announced that it has upgraded its investigation of nearly 1.3 million Ford Explorers from model years 1991 to 1994. There have been 106 complaints that the spare tire has dropped from under the vehicle onto the road because the cable failed to hold it in place. NHTSA said one accident has been reported and in six cases, the wheel dropped off and damaged vehicles following the Explorer. NHTSA opens any safety investigation with a preliminary inquiry in which the government and manufacturer exchange paperwork, including any complaints. By Associated Press STUTTGART, Germany-- Mercedes-Benz announced a worldwide
recall Friday for 26,000 Mercedes S-Class and CL Coupe models made this
year to check a fan regulator for the air conditioning that could potentially
overheat. The German-American automaker said it had received a few complaints
from drivers reporting smoldering smells from parts in the system that
were overheating. It blamed a materials problem with a supplier. Mercedes
owners were advised to have the regulator checked so as to prevent any
fires from breaking out, it said. A spokesman for the company said the
process would cost the company $4.45 million.
