Federal safety agency expands investigation of GM cars

NHTSA announced that it has upgraded its investigation of nearly 1.3 million Ford Explorers from model years 1991 to 1994. There have been 106 complaints that the spare tire has dropped from under the vehicle onto the road because the cable failed to hold it in place. NHTSA said one accident has been reported and in six cases, the wheel dropped off and damaged vehicles following the Explorer.

NHTSA opens any safety investigation with a preliminary inquiry in which the government and manufacturer exchange paperwork, including any complaints. The investigation then can be upgraded to an engineering analysis, as in the case of the Explorer and GM cars, during which engineers study parts to see if they are defective. An investigation eventually can lead to a recall.

Recalls included in the monthly report issued were:

1999-2000 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer; wipers can fail and affect visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. There are 208,903 of the vehicles on the road. The company has notified vehicle owners and dealers will fix the problem.

1997-2000 Chevrolet Corvettes;
the seat belt can get jammed. There are 71,569 of the cars on the road. Affected owners have been notified and dealers will make repairs.

1996-1997 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana; fuel may leak and could start a fire. There are 109,239 of the vans on the road. GM has not yet decided on a remedy, NHTSA said.

NHTSA also announced that it has opened the following investigations:

1995-1996 GM C/K Trucks, Sierra, Suburban, Yukon and Tahoe;
10 complaints of wires breaking in the headlight high-low control circuit, which can make the headlights fail. There are about 1.7 million of the vehicles on the road.

1996-2000 Audi A4; 32 reports of malfunctioning brakes in wet conditions, including one crash. There are an estimated 105,000 of the vehicles on the road.

2000 Jeep Wrangler; one complaint that the drivers side air bag is not properly attached to the steering wheel, which could mean it won't deploy in a crash. It is unknown how many of the vehicles are on the road.

DaimlerChrysler recalls 26,000 Mercedes to fix air conditioning

Reuters By Associated Press STUTTGART, Germany-- Mercedes-Benz announced a worldwide recall Friday for 26,000 Mercedes S-Class and CL Coupe models made this year to check a fan regulator for the air conditioning that could potentially overheat. The German-American automaker said it had received a few complaints from drivers reporting smoldering smells from parts in the system that were overheating. It blamed a materials problem with a supplier. Mercedes owners were advised to have the regulator checked so as to prevent any fires from breaking out, it said. A spokesman for the company said the process would cost the company $4.45 million.
